Vision Therapy for Kids & Adults

Our team understands that having 20/20 eyesight does not guarantee good vision. A typical eye exam and chart test only assesses your ability to identify letters at a distance, overlooking other essential visual skills such as focusing, depth perception, peripheral vision, and eye-hand coordination.

We offer vision therapy for kids and adults to work on these crucial visual skills and assist in detecting developmental vision problems that can significantly affect a child’s ability to learn and succeed.

What Is Vision Therapy?

At Eyes of Texas Vision Care, we offer comprehensive developmental vision evaluations that assess various areas related to vision processing. Vision therapy is like physical therapy for the eyes, addressing visual skills and processing efficiency.

Before designing a personalized vision therapy program, our experienced optometrist, Dr. Fern Yee, will conduct a thorough visual processing assessment.

Why Is Vision Therapy Important?

Our vision therapy services are focused on adults and children. We recognize that early detection of developmental vision problems can make a significant difference in a child’s ability to learn and succeed.

Unfortunately, many children with learning-related vision problems struggle silently, unable to communicate their difficulties to parents or teachers.

We aim to help your children face developmental vision challenges with a variety of techniques and tests. Our team is committed to your child’s visual development and health, and our vision therapy programs are built around that.

What Can Vision Therapy Help?

While vision therapy is particularly beneficial for children with academic difficulties, strabismus, and amblyopia, it can also offer positive outcomes for those:

  • With special needs
  • With head injuries/stroke
  • Looking to reduce computer eye strain
  • Seeking to enhance their sports performance

With dizziness and balance issues like eye turns and amblyopia

Experienced Vision Therapy Care from Dr. Fern Yee

Dr. Fern Yee is our dedicated optometrist who specializes in diagnosing and treating binocular vision and learning-related visual disorders. She received her Doctor of Optometry degree from Pacific University in 1993.

Dr. Yee has a particular interest in working with children, young adults, and adults to improve their vision-related learning difficulties. With her expertise and compassionate approach, you can trust that your vision therapy needs are in capable hands.

The Vision Therapy Process

Upon referral to our vision therapy program, we will schedule an assessment to evaluate your child’s visual efficiency and visual processing profile. This assessment may be conducted in one or two sessions.

Based on the results, Dr. Yee will review the profile and make recommendations for an individualized vision therapy program. Sessions are typically scheduled in-office twice a month, lasting one hour each, and include home support therapy.

Our Vision Therapy Exercises

Vision therapy is a comprehensive approach that combines various exercises and techniques tailored to the individual’s specific needs.

When it comes to vision therapy exercises, there are various options available to address different vision issues. These exercises can be done at home or under the guidance of a therapist.

These exercises are designed to be practiced at home and aim to improve specific visual skills, such as eye coordination, tracking, and focusing abilities.

Syntonics involves the use of colored light to stimulate specific parts of the visual system. This therapy is often used to treat conditions like amblyopia and visual processing difficulties.

Prism lenses are specially prescribed lenses that can help improve ocular alignment and reduce symptoms like double vision and eye strain. They work by redirecting light to achieve a more balanced visual perception.

Yoked prisms are another type of prism lens that can be used to correct eye misalignment. These prisms are typically prescribed in pairs, with each lens helping to align the eyes correctly.

With the increasing use of digital devices, computer-based vision therapy exercises have become popular. These exercises aim to improve visual processing skills, reduce eyestrain, and enhance visual comfort during screen time.

Signs You May Need Vision Therapy

Signs vision therapy may be a good option for you include:

  • Red or sore eyes after reading
  • Jerky eye movements
  • Frequent squinting
  • Blurred vision while reading
  • Headaches or dizziness

Additionally, performance clues like avoidance of near work, losing place while reading, poor reading comprehension, and reversals in letters and words can also be an indication that you or your child could benefit from vision therapy.

Vision Therapy Results

Vision therapy can offer a wide range of benefits, including:

  • Improved reading comprehension
  • Decreased eyestrain and headaches
